|specialknives||09:12 pm - Goth events that aren't about alcohol|
This is something I have been thinking about. It might relate to you if you are more part of the goth scene than the Straight Edge scene.
Back in the days when I used to drink and do drugs and lived in New Zealand, I was in an events-organising crew - mostly we put on what would be called a club or a club night in the UK. Tt was the only goth club night in our city, so it became something of a representation of local goth culture.
I soon noticed there were a few goths around saying "I'd like to go to your club night but I can't because [I'm not old enough/I have kids/I don't like bars/etc]" so I took it upon myself to make sure that the crew put on some events outside the club night that would include people who might not want or be able to go to an event in a bar. This idea was not generally supported by the rest of the crew, but we did a couple of picnics, this one and this one. I left the events-organising crew mainly because of our differences about what was important, shall we say. They don't do picnics any more, or anything apart from alcoh-centric events.
In spite of this, both the picnics I mentioned were very well attended. I also recently attended a goth picnic just outside of London was at the garden where The Cure's The Hanging Garden was filmed. There were loads of people at that too.
What I'm getting at is that I think, given a chance, the goth community does embrace events that aren't centered around alcohol.
I was just wondering whether any of you have any stuff like that going on in your community? If not, maybe you should organise something? Build the counter-culture.

|specialknives||11:26 pm - seven questions for seven straight spooks|
Not exactly a statistically-valid sample, but I feel the need to ask some questions:
1. Does everyone on this list personally claim Edge, or are some members for other reasons, eg, personal interest in the topic, planning to claim Edge?
2. Where do you live?
3. How old are you?
4. If you claim Edge, since when?
5. What's your definition of Edge?
6. Can you tell us briefly about some things that might have influenced your current lifestyle choice (Goth and Edge) - experiences / music / people / reading...?
7. Do you think there's a correlation between some Goth ethics/aesthetics and Edge ethics?
I'll tell you all mine later ;)
A Straight Edge Goth group? Terrific! Count me in.

I'd pretty much given up on seeing other sXe that were Goth, on top of that. The rest of my friends are alcoholics and drug addicts. While I sympathize for them for their reasons for "self-medication", it's something I can allow myself to only get so close to. Nowm, I can talk about things, without everybody running off and feeling completely insulted. Yeah, sometimes, I talk about that stuff on purpose because it's intended as constructive criticism, but, a lot of the time, it isn't taken like that, and I'm left feeling like I should have a roll of duct tape to put over my mouth, or something.

Never finding a sXe goth of the opposite sex, or finding one, and him not being interested in you.

sorry i have not introduced myself in any particular way. i am grace, and i must say one thing.. the whole gothic scene lately [as well as others] has, what seems to me, been whiped out. the real idea of the scene has been overrun by people who are only into it for the alcohol, drugs, or whatever peice of ass they think they can pick up. it really disturbs me. i was into it for the music, and i still am, but i've pretty much dropped the appearance.. it doesn't take the clothing to know what you are. and wasn't the original idea about connecting with interesting/intelligent people, and music? what has happened to our scene?! i think the genre has renamed itself, to escape the stereotypes that are now consuming what used to be "goth".. i am not sure what genre they have moved to.. but mostly the intelligence factor has dissapated.. the original people who kept it alive in the 80's are now parents and probably dress like everyone else, just trying to make a living, and i am sure that if any of them went back to their scene they would be discusted with what they found.
that is primarily why i joined this group. i know it was made to keep the gothic scene from going further down the whole with petty things such as alcohol, drugs, etc. but should it not also express the humiliation of the intelligent group that has to sit back and watch this?
i'm sure that i could have worded this better if i had not just crammed my brain full of things i am supposed to know for tests tomarrow. so my apologies.
if you wish to add anything, leave a note.
it's good to have a community like this!
long live sXe!
